Description
We were on our way to many places that day as it turned out. This section of the Appian Way is really a graveyard as the Romans insisted on having the dead buried outside the walls of Rome. So the road itself is eventful but also leads to the Catacombs of Domitilla and the Catacombs of St. Sebastian, more dead, et al. The planned on luncheon stop was closed so we moved on to a random selection further down the via Appia which turned out to be a former tomb. The pasta was al dente. We had the Arch of Drusus & Aurelian Wall to pass through, a Latin read with Quo Vadis, miles to walk, passion flowers to see on the way up a long hill to the Tomb of Caecilia Metella, more Latin across from her mausoleum that looked every bit a castle, a walk down the hill to a five course dinner at Ristorante L'Archeologia (excellent), and a walk in the dark up a narrow hill to the best thing in Rome, a bus stop. When the bus arrived we became Romans returning in triumph of victory to stumble up our piece of a Roman hill before the Sisters of the Casa per ferie Pallottine locked us out of the lodging for the night.
