Description
I struggled for most of the day once I realized there was a distinct possibility that this likely was the last day in Rome. I looked at my iPhone repeatedly to see if there was some calculus that would yield yet another day. Im not overstating it in the least. I really could not get my head around that Rome was over. Surely I was looking at the dates and time changes back to Florida in some backwards way that would mean that we had yet another day! Not to be. There would be a late night packing and an 4 AM rush to the Fiumicino; and then Dusseldorf and over night back in Fort Meyers. Nicely it brought no pall over me or apparently over anyone in the group although most of the students were collapsed on the grass at the edge of the Giardino degli Aranci. The Hat chatted with Louisiana Long and other supine beings still awake. We walked back down the Aventine by way of Clivo di Rocca Savella a road cut in the hill that leads to the Tiber. Crossing the river we were back in Trastevere heading for a Ai marmi Pizzeria on the Viale di Trastevere for a single glass of wine chased by bottles of acqua frizzante - lots of them! I checked; it was fourteen miles by hoof that last day. From the edge of the Parco Savello one can see back to where we were going to walk. The presence of Saint Peters dominates the view, but recognitions spread out across the entire scene. Synapses were firing saying Ive been to that building, that place, and maybe Ill remember a bit of the story or not but the vista over the precipice spreading across the city from the Aventine will always be inside me.
