Description
It was an on again - off again with a mist as we walked along the very eventful via Appia. My recollection is that we bussed to shy of the Circus Maximus. Stopping under the only pine tree or tree of any sort in the Circus Maximus; Latin was read. We then walked up to the Baths of Caracalla. Even more Latin was read under shelter from the mist. Our shelter was part of the bath’s mammoth brick structure. Then en route to the via Appia we dropped by the Church of Nereus & Achilleus. Heading out the via Appia we came to the Arch of Drusus and a gate in the Aurelian Wall which are essentially together. An important part of the day, lunch came in a ristorante made out of an ancient tomb. The food was great. The acqua frizzante even better. Circus Maximus to the Arch of Drusus is two kilometers. We had shy of one kilometer from the Arch of Drusus to the Church of Domine Quo Vadis. It was 1.5 kilometers from the Church of Domine Quo Vadis to the Catacombs of Domitilla. It could have been a hundred. It seemed like a hundred. We had already walked 4.5 from the Circus Maximus. It was another kilometer to the Catacombs of St Sebastian. This is not flat Illinois farmland, Hey it was on 600 meters up hill to the Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella. Latin meant we stopped walking, and I could shoot. There had been Latin all along the way, but there was more at Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella while we waited to walk back down the hill into the village for dinner. Dinner was fantastic at the Archeologia. After dinner we walked up a hill in the dark to a bus stop and waited as we watched a few crazy Roman drivers do crazy Roman driving. We read no Latin in the dark.
