Description
I walked around this hedge maze/boneyard of the Roman statuary world. There were pieces and parts laid out in the orderly fashion of an auto junkyard. This was outdoors in a small park just in front of the museum part of the Baths of Diocletian. Latin was being read under the shade of a tree growing in a large planter. Besides the lovely option of sitting down on the many stone benches one could wander for some time here and there in this small entry plaza. Over on the museum wall were several works that one could easily discern as sculpture versus the many that looked to be tombstones or markers of some sort with words/images cut into the stone but long worn into oblivion. There was one sculpture that was striking. I have seen my share of statues and other sculpture. I had never seen one that radiated movement or the potential for movement as this one. It simply amazed me. It is not stone representing cellular human motion. It is the human skeleton, sinew, and muscle inside the stone that animates and radiates a core element of life.
