Description
The scale of the basilica is phenomenal. One expects public buildings to be large in scale, and even expect sculpture in those buildings to be scaled up a notch or two. It is especially obvious how very large most of the objects are when compared to St. Peter himself sitting in his famous bronze chair. He does not look right because he is not in the same scale as old Saint Longinus and many others standing or sitting around the place for the last five centuries or so. The space is mammoth so the really big objects and sculptures work until one tries to get up close and personal. Very quickly one discovers that any eyeball to eyeball approach to these saintly folks is shortly out of the question. Long before anyone heard of Osama bin Laden I was in New York City. I wanted to go to the World Trade Center. All I did was walk in one tower entrance and walk the big square hall that was the lobby which was centered with banks of elevators. I did not go up. I did not go down. I just walked around. The ground floors had very high ceilings and the mostly empty space was massive. St. Peter’s Basilica reminded me of the scale I remembered from the World Trade Center. (“The interior is of vast dimensions when compared with other churches.[6] One author wrote: "Only gradually does it dawn upon us – as we watch people draw near to this or that monument, strangely they appear to shrink; they are, of course, dwarfed by the scale of everything in the building. This in its turn overwhelms us.”[11]” Article in Wikipedia: St. Peter’s Basilica: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Peter%27s_Basilica)
