Arts in Ada

Arts in Ada

It was cool and supposed to rain. It was and it did. There was also a huge generator for the elephant ear’s trailer. The generator ended up being OK because as it ran it sounded like water in one of those big air conditioning units. Not bad. The rain came at 2ish and they closed the show early.

Rain and cold does not make for a great art fair. I’d never been to Ada proper so I was pleased to see it. Lovely village. Loverly houses. It is actually a nice art fair. I’ll go back.

I am never overly pleased to have to set up --which takes me 3 hours and tear down (2 hours) all in the same day. Great sales do make up for it, but that was not to be. I did sell some matted prints and and a canvas print so I have no real complaints except for getting up at 4:30 AM and not getting home until after 7:00 PM---such is the life. It is also a congested setup and teardown. One really has to dump everything, park the car, and come back & setup climbing all over one’s gear. Not fun, and slow. Finally one always makes do.

The neighbor to the left was selling beef jerky (not exactly sure of his ‘artistic’ connection (but it was popular with the denizens.) and the neighbor to the right made Adirondack chairs. He planes the rough cut lumber himself. Very nice. He had a pile and sold all but two two-seaters. David Yonker is Crooked Creek Woodwork, Inc. at 269.948.7921 Hastings, Michigan. Nice work. Nice person. From all the comments his work is very reasonably priced.

I had ample time to test out some various configurations of the print bins, and I think I finally found a way that works. I got fed up with too many Propanels/tent poles/canvas prints/other detritus and hauling stuff I don’t use very often. No more! Before the next show there will be a severe reduction. I’ve done this before but the van seems to always be jammed.

Nope, I did not have an elephant ear or funnel cake. To my recollection I’ve never tried either. I do like powdered sugar (thank you Mother -- on Mother’s Day!) but I have never tried either temptation.

I did however on a return trip from the restrooms buried deep within a village building hooked onto what looked like a church -- find on the way back the free donuts supplied by the show. They were good --alas, not from Ada. They were acquired in Forest Hills. Worth the trip.

Chelsea Art well craft well no body there Fair

May 4th & May 5th 2013 at the Chelsea Michigan Fairgrounds. It was nice that the show was going to be inside because the first weekend in May is often difficult. The weather was actually glorious.

I will not belabor the fact that attendance was abysmal. This was obvious from the empty isles as well the limited sales.

So to focus on the positive my neighbors across the isle Joe Kisselburg & Arlene Stein were delightful as was Dutch, Joe’s preschool son. Joe is a tie dye artist. I’m not usually a fan, but I really liked his black & brown work.

The gentleman looking through Joe’s black & brown work was actually another vendor. When you are selling to other vendors it is a sure sign that there are no customers.

I really had a great time listening to Joe talk. I suspect there are few people that know Chelsea better than Joe.

Joe’s business is called Kiss of Color. Check it out at - http://kissofcolor.gostorego.com
