Description
We were in Piazza Colonna for a long time. It seemed like it was a long time to me! I was not used to the amount of time Latin required. I got used to it over the course of days. There was a lot of Latin to decipher on the base of the column. This suited me as there is a real cool fountain (Fontana di Piazza Colonna) on the north end of the piazza on the edge of a busy street. There also were the buildings surrounding the piazza to survey. In any case St. Paul climbed up there on top of the column at the behest of Pope Sixtus V some time around 1589 to replace what was probably a sculpture of Marcus Aurelius. Marcus climbed down at some unknown previous date — probably unwillingly. Really intriguing is that inside the column is a spiral staircase which for a fee one could in the distant past — climb. I probably would pass at any cost and in any century as there is only one way up and down. I bet it was stuffy inside the column even though air and light had egress through slits in the column facade. The thought is just not attractive to be on those spiral stairs with all those sweating bodies passing the 30 meters up and then down. I was still concerned about misplacing the Hat so I did not wander too far across the piazza and as I gawked I assiduously kept him in eyesight like spying a white egret in a swamp of alligators. However, all of a sudden he was off with all the ducks keeping a fast pace except me! I was off to one side of the piazza, and then I saw I would regret not getting a clean shot of St. Paul. I stopped, held my breath, stuck my elbows into my gut, and took a few shots knowing that the Hat was fading in the crowd down a random street on to what turned out to be Chisea di San Luigi dei Francesi. It was not a short walk to see the Frenchmen’s church.
