Description
We spent a long time at and around the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls with lunch, reading Latin in what looked to be a park (turned out the Americans parked a lot of tanks there during WWII), and waiting. There was a rather relaxed touring of the Basilica both outside and inside. The Hat was working most of the time, but here there was time together to stroll, chat, and shoot at some leisure. They have excellent modern restrooms with toilet seats actually in place. This is an important fact. Remember it! We waited outside I think for a mass to commence, but it is unclear to me six months later. The last photo I have from there was taken at 5:18 P.M. As it goes many of these glorious edifices were all about the insides and not the outsides. The Basilica on the outside was not much to look at from where I sat with a fair amount of trash blowing around the piazza, kids & parents playing with balls, teenagers vertically entwined out in the park’s center, and residents walking with purpose at a diagonal to their appointed egress at a far corner of the park. We sat on a low wall dividing the grass from the cobblestone piazza enclosing this side of the Basilica. Sooner or later I always wonder how and where people in large cities obtain groceries, gasoline, and in this case tires. There was a train ride back to the north into Rome proper. Then we walked past the Colosseum in the early evening to our appointed restaurant with open window/doors to the sidewalk under the rising gloom of the Palatine Hill and swooping swallows still working in the sinking light.
