Description
We were stymied by another wedding. On this last day I looked forward to going into the chisea - The Basilica of Santa Aurea. I did not know at the time but this was the saint with the golden hair - aurea or in Greek - chryse - golden. This is great appellation for a Renaissance basilica. I am really sorry that circumstances did not allow seeing if the basilica lived up to the moniker. I suspect it did, but seeing inside was not to be. Latin was read along a wall as we waited well away from the wedding arrivals. This piece of the Piazza della Rocca looked to be a residence. The flora along the walls and tile roofs made it clear to me that this could be Southern California as much as Italy. In early July of 2006 we traveled by bus up the western shore of the Italian peninsula to the port of Civitavecchia where our cruise ship was waiting. The properties along the way looked to be agricultural. The hills were golden brown (almost bleached blond) grasslands with dotted farmsteads here and there. Certainly Italy was the land of the Santa Aurea, and her golden tresses.
