Description
Surrounding the Temple of Ceres is the Forum of the Corporations. I have no recollection of seeing the mosaics in 2015 which represent the various trades that presented their goods and services in the forum. I simply did not walk the forty steps to see what was there just beyond where we sat and much Latin was read on the temple steps. What remains of the forum are these fabulous mosaics which provided the floors for the shops. In 2016 I had much more leisure as I was seriously separated from the Latin scholars so I wandered more on my own. (Egocentrically I figured I would not end up in Naples had I to find my way back into Roma.) That these mosaics survived the centuries, and were not destroyed by the floods, alluvial gunk, or the archeological processes that brought them back to daylight is truly wondrous. There are dozens of mosaics. Ostia was a port city that was an important trading center for the city of Rome. The vendors in the forum were primarily selling useful tools for the shipping industry.
