Description
We arrived by foot at Basilica Santa Croce in Gerusalemme to what ws becoming a common site for us being in Rome in June -- another wedding. The Hat was loath to interrupt the event so we quickly moved out to the benches and grass to take up the appropriate Latin text. Prior to our exit we did get some up close time with the wedding if not the insides of the Basilica. The principals did not seem to mind or even notice. I later read Evelyn Waugh’s Helena based on a the Hat’s passing reference to the work. In summary it is a paean to herself and her various Christian activities digging around Jerusalem for relics of Christ’s crucifixion. The Basilica was built around Helena’s chapel in her imperial palace. The Wikipedia article on the church says that the floor was originally made of soil shipped from Jerusalem. It really helps to be the mother of the Emperor Constantine.
