Description
We were headed to Tre Fontane Abbey which is a little more than eight miles to the south on the east side of the Fiume Tevere, This is far enough that had I had any clue on how far we were going I might have had walking doubts. All was well because we headed to Termini Station via a bus, and then had a rather short Roma Metro train ride to a station which in the end did not seem at all close to the Abbey. I suppose it was in relative terms. However, this was my first real exposure to the walking pace we were to keep over the next nine days. Google Maps says it is 14 minutes (2.5 km) from Laurentina station north on Via Laurentina to Tre Fontane Abbey. I can not say it was an enjoyable walk there, but returning was better as much Latin was read at the Abbey which resulted in my first Latin engendered shooting & sitting time for me. I was to learn over the next few experiences with the bus/train system of the Roma Metro how wonderful it was for getting around with the usual caveat of bus/train waiting required by all such transportation systems. The Hat went into a tabacchi shop, bought the one day, three day or seven day passes. Once on the bus there were validation machines in the front & back of the buss where one ran the ticket through the machine. That was it. Get on and off any bus all day long for the duration of the pass. Nice. Convenient. No hassle. There were lots of buses. Often at rush hour they were full. At other times we could spread out.
