Artist's Description

The Lateran Obelisk is the largest standing ancient Egyptian obelisk in the world, and it is also the tallest obelisk in Italy. It originally weighed 413 metric tons (455 tons), but after collapsing and being re-erected 4 meters (13 feet) shorter, now weighs around 300 metric tons (330 tons).[1][2] It is located in the square across from the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran and the San Giovanni Addolorata Hospital. Originally from the temple of Amun in Karnak, map the obelisk was first brought to Alexandria over the Nile by obelisk ship in the early 4th century along with the Obelisk of Theodosius by Constantius II. He intended to bring them both to Constantinople, his new capital for the Roman empire. The obelisk never made it there. (Wikipedia)

About Joseph Yarbrough

Joseph Yarbrough

I use Lightroom, Photoshop & NIK to work with highlights & shadows which often brings out the elements in a photograph for which I have primary interest. I have no hesitation using any other tool if the results make the photograph work. My preference is to do nothing to a photograph presenting it as it was taken. My web site is named light & shadows because both light and shadows are the visual elements that hold the most fascination for me. If time and space...
