Artist's Description

We were in Piazza Colonna for a long time. It seemed like it was a long time to me! I was not used to the amount of time Latin required. I got used to it over the course of days.There was a lot of Latin to decipher on the base of the column. This suited me as there is a real cool fountain (Fontana di Piazza Colonna) on the north end of the piazza on the edge of a busy street. There also were the buildings surrounding the piazza to survey. In any case St. Paul climbed up there on top of the column at the behest of Pope Sixtus V some time around 1589 to replace what was probably a sculpture of Marcus Aurelius. Marcus climbed down at some unknown previous date — probably unwillingly. Really intriguing is that inside the column is a spiral staircase which for a fee one could in the distant past — climb. My subjects are both natural and architectural. I am interested in textures and shapes and how light and shadow play on those objects often creating new ones. I use a Nikon D-800, and an iPhone 10s Max. I make every effort to compose in the camera and thus I crop infrequently. I use Lightroom, Photoshop & NIK to work with highlights & shadows which often brings out the elements in a photograph for which I have primary interest. I have no hesitation using any other tool if the results make the photograph work. My preference is to do nothing to a photograph presenting it as it was taken.
